Lane Kiffin leaving Tennessee for USC

Lane Kiffin's time in the SEC didn't last long. The coach bolted for the open position at USC after one headline-grabbin', NCAA rule-violatin', SEC coach-offendin' year at Tennessee. He'll be missed.

ESPN first reported the story
. USC's athletic director confirmed it Tuesday evening.

Because my Internet continues to be on the fritz, this news just arrived to me via Carrier pigeon.

There's not much to say about this other than ... wow. Pretty surprising that he would leave after just one season, but he's got roots at Southern Cal and it's a choice job.

I'm not sure who will replace him, but I'm sure plenty of interesting names will be mentioned for the position. To think, there's been head coaching turnover this offseason at marquee schools like Notre Dame, Florida State, Florida, USC and now Tennessee. Crazy year.

The Tennessee administration should view this as an opportunity and not make a panic hire. (I heard they contacted Houston Nutt.) They must not react like drowining men and grab the first available object.

There is time, except for the recruiting implications. But it might be wiser to take the hit this time and hire a good coach for the long haul.

I don't know why anyone would want to become a football head coach at a school that is facing severe NCAA sanctions. USC may be in a good area for recruiting, but I bet few players would go there knowing that the program would be weakened by the serious penalties the NCAA imposes.

I saw that ESPN is reporting Will Muschamp is Tennessee's top target. Don't know if he'll take the job, but that would be a home run hire.

And I think the Trojans might take a brief hit from these NCAA sanctions. But the good schools never stay down for long, especially one like USC that has such a deep recruiting base in its backyard and can attract recruits nationally just based on its location.
