Signee profile: WR Sammie Coates

Sammie Coates, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound receiver from Leroy, Ala., just sent in his letter of intent.

A former Southern Miss commit, Coates picked Auburn after attending the Tigers' summer camp, where he ran a 4.31-second time in the 40-yard dash. Recruiting experts like the tall, gangly receiver's upside, although he's far from a ready-made product.

He caught 57 passes for 14 touchdowns and added 8 rushing scores for Leroy High, which won the 2-A state championship. Coates was named 2A Back of the Year.

  • Committed: July 17, 2010
  • Recruited by: NA
  • Also considered: Southern Miss, Northwestern, UAB
  • Rivals: 71 position, 12 state
  • Scout: 57 position
  • ESPN: 75 position
  • Notable: Former high school teammate of Auburn quarterback Clint Moseley
  • Quotable: “They wanted me to come and prove myself. They had been talking to me for a couple of months about coming to a camp. I finally went up there and got big news on the first day.” -- Coates in July

Here's a scouting report by Scout's Andrew Bone:
Coates has blazing speed and does a great job exploding off the ball. He is quick and runs great routes. Coates has the ability to stretch the field and a future No. 1 target on the next level. He must continue to improve his strength and durability. He is in great shape but must hit the weight room and get ready to play in the SEC.
