NCAA regional: Clemson 5, Auburn 2, Final

We're blogging the Auburn-Clemson game on an inning-by-inning basis. Follow us on Twitter here for instant scoring updates.

9TH INNING
Clemson 5, Auburn 2: 1-2-3 ninth for Clemson. Hunter Morris hit a solo homer, but Casey Harman got through the inning without further damage. Ballgame.

8TH INNING
Clemson 5, Auburn 1: Grant Dayton finally ran out of gas after 7 2/3 innings. Sean Ray replaced him and got out of the inning despite having two runners on. Dayton gave up five runs on seven hits. He struck out nine and threw a career-high 130 pitches. Some hilarity in the bottom of the inning. With one out and one on,, the umps ruled that Justin Fradejas struck out swinging on a ball that looked like it hit his hand. John Pawlowski came out to argue the play. Eventually the call was overturned, sending Clemson coach Jack Leggett into a tizzy. Nothing comes of it. Trent Mummey and Brian Fletcher both strike out to end the inning.
7TH INNING
Clemson 5, Auburn 1: Grant Dayton set down Clemson in order again. That's 10 straight for the left-hander, who has thrown a career-high 126 pitches. He struck out Mike Freeman to end the inning, his ninth punch out of the night. Auburn goes down quietly. Hunter Morris was hit by a pitch, but the next three batters do nothing. Auburn's running out of time.
6TH INNING
Clemson 5, Auburn 1: Grant Dayton has his strongest inning yet, striking out the side. He's up to eight strikeouts for the game. That's seven straight he's retired. He's up to 116 pitches for the night. Auburn looked like it might have had some life after a Justin Fradejas single. Wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor got the crowd into a tizzy by waving a towel. But Clemson center fielder Wilson Boyd made a leaping catch at the wall to rob Brian Fletcher of what looked like it would be a home run. That ended the inning. Huge momentum shift.
5TH INNING
Clemson 5, Auburn 1: Two strikeouts that inning for Grant Dayton, who now has five K's. Clemson goes down 1-2-3 for the second time. Tony Caldwell, who is the DH instead of Kevin Patterson because a lefty is on the mound, hit a solo homer to lead off Auburn's half of the fifth. It was the Tigers' first hit of the night. Caldwell has nine home runs this year. The next three hitters go down quietly. Clemson starter Casey Harman has thrown only 73 pitches.
4TH INNING
Clemson 5, Auburn 0: Richie Shaffer and Wilson Boyd hit back-to-back doubles to push across another run. Things got worse when third baseman Dan Gamache made a nice stab on a grounder that took a bad hop but threw it away at first, allowing another run to score. Grant Dayton can't have much more in him. He's thrown 99 pitches. Still nothing for Auburn. Justin Fradejas tried a bunt to get things started. It looked like it didn't get out of the batter's box, but the umpire ruled it fair anyway and Fradejas was easily thrown out. John Pawlowski had a nice discussion with the umpire about it. The ump was unmoved by Pawlowski's argument. Still no hits for Auburn through four.
3RD INNING
Clemson 3, Auburn 0: Grant Dayton finally settled in, getting a fly out, a strikeout and a ground out. Almost a scary play on the ground out, with Hunter Morris taking it himself and colliding with Brad Miller running down the line. He looked OK. Dayton's up to 63 pitches through three innings. Auburn got its first baserunner when Miller drooped a pop up by Ryan Jenkins at short. No harm. Casey McElroy hit into a double play to erase the error. Justin Hargett followed with a strikeout. No hits for Auburn through three. Casey Harman has four strikeouts for Clemson.
2ND INNING
Clemson 3, Auburn 0: No runs for the Tigers, although Wilson Boyd made Grant Dayton work before lacing a 3-2 pitch for a single. Dayton's now thrown 56 pitches. He's going to need some quick innings to get deep into this game. Three up, three down again for Auburn, although the Tigers at least worked a pair of 3-2 counts this inning. Remember, last night Auburn went through the order once before getting a baserunner.
1ST INNING
Clemson 3, Auburn 0: Mike Freeman started the scoring with a moonshot that reached the right field bleachers for a two-run homer off Grant Dayton. It was Freeman's eighth this year. John Hinson added an RBI single to make it a three-run inning and prompt a mound visit from John Pawlowski. Dayton threw 38 pitches in the top of the first. Auburn goes down in order, striking out twice. Clemson starter Casey Harman only needed 12 pitches to get through the inning.

We're starting the Auburn-Clemson blog early. Not the most promising looking skies to the southwest. That's a big ol' cluster of rainstorms headed for Plainsman Park, which had rains earlier today that postponed the start of the Southern Miss-Jacksonville State game. (Update: Start time of 9:15 p.m. ET has been announced.)

There are at least 50 minutes between games so the grounds crew can re-chalk the field and both teams can warm up. So we're looking on at least a post 8 p.m. ET starting time in the battle of the the Tigers.

Here's Auburn's lineup. It's got one change, with Tony Caldwell hitting in the DH spot for Kevin Patterson. Clemson's throwing a lefty, so it makes sense. Stats are AVG-HR-RBI:
RF Justin Fradejas (.350-2-28)
CF Trent Mummey (.368-15-48)
LF Brian Fletcher (.359-20-71)
1B Hunter Morris (.387-21-70)
DH Tony Caldwell (.352-9-40)
3B Dan Gamache (.386-8-36)
C Ryan Jenkins (.364-7-38)
SS Casey McElroy (.321-7-38)
2B Justin Hargett (.317-2-32)

LHP Grant Dayton (8-2, 4.33 ERA)
And here's Clemson's lineup:
DH Will Lamb (.305-4-36)
2B Mike Freeman (.327-7-52)
LF Jeff Schaus (.314-15-77)
RF Kyle Parker (.362-19-59)
SS Brad Miller (.370-7-38)
3B John Hinson (.327-13-63)
1B Richie Shaffer (.331-4-24)
CF Wilson Boyd (.297-5-41)
C Spencer Kieboom (.292-5-41)

LHP Casey Harman (6-2, 4.14 ERA)
Auburn's the home team and is wearing the all-whites. Clemson is wearing orange tonight. Check that, maybe purple. Two sets of unis out there right now. Can't tell which ones are the warmups.

Check back for updates. We'll be blogging tonight. And of course, follow the blog on Twitter.
