NCAA regional: Clemson 10, So. Miss 1, Final

Auburn doesn't play until tonight at 7 p.m. ET against Jacksonville State, but that doesn't mean the blog is ignoring the early game in the regional this afternoon between second-seeded Clemson and third-seeded Southern Miss.

We'll be blogging throughout, making sure to stay within the NCAA's lengthy restrictions in the process.

9TH INNING
Clemson 10, Southern Miss 1: And that's a wrap. Clemson will play the Auburn-Jacksonville State winner tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET. Southern Miss will play the loser of Auburn-Jacksonville State tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET in an elimination game.
8TH INNING
Clemson 10, Southern Miss 1: We've resumed play. Why bother. This one's pretty much over. Golden Eagles second baseman Taylor Walker hit into a double play and barely ran the ball out to first.
7TH INNING
Clemson 10, Southern Miss 1: Quick inning for both teams, and here comes a delay. Apparently there's lightning in the area. It's very sunny right now. Didn't see any lightning. This is ridiculous. It's a 30-minute delay from the last lightning strike before they can start again. The tarp is unrolled, poised to be put on the field if a small cluster of rain happens to hit Auburn soon.
6TH INNING
Clemson 10, Southern Miss 1: The Tigers are putting this one out of reach, scoring six times in the sixth. John Hinson's 12th homer of the year, a solo shot to right-center, started the scoring. Will Lamb added an RBI single and Jeff Schaus' single scored two. The Tigers scored a run on a passed ball and another on Brad Miller's RBI single. Clemson chased Southern Miss starter Scott Copeland after 5 1/3 innings. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and threw 107 pitches. Keep in mind that he was 11-0 entering the day.
5TH INNING
Clemson 4, Southern Miss 1: The Golden Eagles get on the board with a pair of doubles by Joey Archer and Tyler Koelling. Koelling gets stranded on third. But the Tigers answer when Will Lamb homered to right-center. It was his fourth home run this year. Clemson tacked on another run on a Kyle Parker single after Mike Freeman reached on an error.
4TH INNING
Clemson 2, Southern Miss 0: Another scoreless inning. Tigers third baseman John Hinson made a nice play on a slow roller by B.A. Vollmuth down the line, making an off-balance throw on the run that first baseman Richie Shaffer picked while practically doing the splits. Southern Miss only has two hits so far.
3RD INNING
Clemson 2, Southern Miss 0: Quick innings for both pitchers. Tiers starter Scott Weismann had a 1-2-3 inning. He's allowed two hits and struck out three through three. Southern Miss' Scott Copeland had a leadoff single to right field wall wiped out when right fielder Tyler Koelling threw out Jeff Schaus trying to stretch it to a double.
2ND INNING
Clemson 2, Southern Miss 0: Huge play for the Golden Eagles. The Tigers loaded the bases with an infield hit, a bloop hit and an error on a sacrifice bunt. But Spencer Kieboom hit a chopper to third turned into a double play, third to home to first. After a walk loaded the bases again, Scott Copeland got Mike Freeman to ground out weakly to first to get out of the jam unscathed. Clemson's Scott Weismann has two strikeouts, both inning-enders, through two innings.
1ST INNING
Clemson 2, Southern Miss 0: Clemson struck first. Mike Freeman hit a double to the left-center field gap that scored Will Lamb. After a grounder advanced Freeman, Kyle Parker lofted a sacrifice fly to right. Freeman made a nice headfirst slide to get around the tag to make it 2-0. Copeland had allowed only five earned runs in his previous 28 1/3 innings.
-----
It's rained a little bit here in Auburn today and the tarp was on the field earlier, but it looks like we're going to be good to go without delay. It's sunny out now.

Fun fact: The Golden Eagles are 17-2 when wearing their gold uniforms. They're 18-20 in other uniforms. What are they wearing today? Gold, naturally. I hope Vegas is aware of this.

Hey Andy, how much are the individual game tickets?

Andy Bitter said...

From the Auburn website: Single-game tickets are $15 for reserved seats, $10 for Terrace Area tickets and $5 for college students with ID.

USM may not be aware they are wearing gold. They need to get it in gear.

Maybe if they switch colors before it's over, it won't count against their gold-uniform record.
