NCAA regional: S. Miss 19, Jacksonville St. 6, F

Here's our running Southern Miss-Jacksonville State blog (follow the blog on Twitter too):

9TH INNING
Southern Miss 19, Jacksonville State 6: That's a wrap. Not much more to say. Southern Miss had 18 hits, three of which were three-run homers. That's normally a recipe for winning. Interesting stat: Golden Eagles closer Collin Cargill pitched the final 7 2/3 innings for the win. He had thrown 38 2/3 innings all year.
8TH INNING
Southern Miss 17, Jacksonville State 6: RBI double for Tyler Koelling brings another run across. Swing the bats quick, folks, if you don't want to get a lightning delay.
7TH INNING
Southern Miss 16, Jacksonville State 6: B.A. Vollmuth absolutely crushed a ball to left-center, up and over the scoreboard for a three-run homer. That's three three-run homers for Southern Miss today. This game is pretty much over. Unfortunately, there's rain on the way. The sky's getting darker to the southwest. Check out the radar. We might have a delay on our hands for the Auburn-Clemson game.
6TH INNING
Southern Miss 13, Jacksonville State 6: The Gamecocks get one back on an RBI single by Jay Davis. They could have had more if not for a nice play made in the hole by shortstop B.A. Vollmuth to get a force at second. JSU ended up stranding runners at second and third. It'll have to get busy here quick to make up this deficit.
5TH INNING
Southern Miss 13, Jacksonville State 5: Two more runs for the Golden Eagles. Taylor Walker and B.A. Vollmuth both had RBI singles. Walker is 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs. Adam Doleac is 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs.
4TH INNING
Southern Miss 11, Jacksonville State 5: The Golden Eagles put up their second four-run inning of the day. They had four straight singles and a double by Dillon Day off the wall in left. The Gamecocks went to their bullpen, bringing our pitchers total up to six on the day. JSU failed to respond and is down by six.
3RD INNING
Southern Miss 7, Jacksonville State 5: No runs for either team. The Golden Eagles went down 1-2-3. The Gamecocks had a one-out single by Daniel Adamson erased when he was picked off first on a questionable call. Southern Miss closer Collin Cargill is in the game. And yes, it's the third inning.
2ND INNING
Southern Miss 7, Jacksonville State 5: Settle in. This will be a long one. Another big inning for the Golden Eagles. After two errors led to the first run, Taylor Walker hit a three-run shot over the big wall in left to make it 7-2. It's his eighth homer of the year. Not to be outdone, JSU's Jay Davis hit a solo homer, his second of the year, in the bottom of the inning. Steven Leach added a two-run single to cut the lead back to two. Things would have been worse if not for a leaping catch at the base of the wall by left fielder Kameron Brunty. We've had five pitchers in four half-innings, by the way.
1ST INNING
Southern Miss 3, Jacksonville State 2: The Golden Eagles got on the board with a three-run homer by Adam Doleac. JSU starter Hunter Rivers faced four batters before getting pulled. He walked the first two on nine pitches, got a strike out and grooved a fastball that Doleac put in the bullpen in right-center. But the Gamecocks came right back in their half of the first with two runs on three hits. A funny thing happened on one play. Kyle Blustein ripped a hard grounder into left for an RBI single. The ball hit the grass and screeched to a halt, spitting up water as it came to a stop about 15 feet out of the dirt. I've never seen that before. Plainsman Park might play interesting tonight. That's a 31-minute first inning by the way. We're going to be here a while tonight.
-----
We're back at Plainsman Park after a slight weather delay of about an hour and a half. Jacksonville State and Southern Miss will start at about 4:30 p.m. ET. There are bright, sunny skies, so it doesn't look like we'll have any problems.

Of course, this means Auburn's game against Clemson tonight is not going to start on time. Using the hour and a half delay, that would put an approximate start time at 8 or 8:30 p.m. ET. Of course, this IS NOT an official start time. Just an educated guess.

For those wondering what the bracket looks like, here it is. (You have to scroll down to see Auburn's regional.) As you can see, it's a long road to the title for a team in the losers bracket, so today's Auburn-Clemson game is a big one.

We'll be back with periodic updates in the Jacksonville State-Southern Miss game, so check back.
