Practice observations: Ryan White in white

Just got to watch a little bit of practice again today. Here are some observations and notes:
  • Freshman Ryan White, who coaches let indulge his quarterback fantasy for the first week and a half, was wearing a white jersey today and presumably was set to work with the defensive back. The 5-foot-10 White (pictured last week by the HABOTN) wore orange and did quarterback drills for several practices because coaches agreed to give him a shot there. White worked on an empty field during kick return drills, probably trying to get caught up on the basics of playing DB.
  • Auburn was in full pads today. It was a hot one. One player exclaimed as much, with a colorful description added to the end that isn't blog-appropriate.
  • Did not see LB Eltoro Freeman (turf toe) out there today. The Muscle Beach group must have been inside.
  • Zac Etheridge was out there in full pads. Auburn didn't do any contact drills while we were out there, so I'm not sure if he was going to partake today.
  • Here's your best bet at kick return, since they were on the field for some drills: Onterio McCalebb, Terrell Zachery, Mario Fannin and Demond Washington.
  • The offensive lineman were working on getting off the line before they stretched. Thankfully, they lined up in three distinct lines for us. Here's the order. Take it for what it's worth:
  • First group: LT Lee Ziemba, LG Mike Berry, C Ryan Pugh, RG Byron Isom, RT John Sullen
  • Second group: LT Brandon Mosley, LG Bart Eddins, C Blake Burgess, RG Jared Cooper, RT A.J. Greene
  • Third group: LT Andre Harris, LG Eric Mack, C Ryan Preston, RG Ed Christian, RT Roszell Gayden
  • Not a great pre-practice session for LB Jonathan Evans. The linebackers were working on shifting during the pre-snap. Evans went to the wrong place a few times before defensive coordinator Ted Roof took him out for Ashton Richardson. Richardson made the right adjustment on the first try, getting a few claps from Roof.
  • Best moment of the day: Freshman Justin Delaine lined up on the kick block team, only he wasn't supposed to. He was in a three-point stance when defensive line coach Tracy Rocker got down in his face and yelled, "HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ON THIS TEAM? HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ON THIS TEAM? WHO PUT YOU ON THIS TEAM? GET YO' (butt) OFF THE FIELD." I'm guessing Delaine will not make that mistake again.
  • PK Chandler Brooks was 7-for-8 on field goals, pulling the final one from 42 yards when the team crowded him.
  • Phillip Lolley had some fun with Etheridge and Aairon Savage, the oldest members of the secondary who were lined up first for a fumble drill at the very end of the viewing period. "We got the old men at the front of the line," he joked. "Y'all been here longer than I have."
  • Lastly, professional golfer Jason Dufner, an Auburn alum, was at practice. He tied for fifth at last weekend's PGA Championship in Wisconsin, his best finish ever in a major. He lives in Auburn and is a big football fan. He was a pal of Tommy Tuberville but likes what Gene Chizik has done. As for the bunker issue at Whistling Straits, he said the PGA sent out memos beforehand, so the players were given proper notice. Did he find himself in that situation? Nope. He hit only three or four bunkers all weekend. "I tend to not be in those areas too often," he said with a smile.

I am getting the sense that the coaches are a little more concerned this year with execution on offense. Hopefully things will come together, but I am getting the sense they are seeing the effect of losing the starting QB and RB.
