Cothron is ranked as the No. 45 overall recruit in the country by Rivals.com after averaging 31 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks a game for Flora Macdonald Academy in Red Springs, N.C.
He chose Auburn over offers from Kentucky, UConn and Tennessee, among others.
Cothron is the new coach Tony Barbee's second signee this spring, joining Huntsville small forward Josh Langford, who is ranked by the Birmingham News as the state's top prospect.
"Luke gives us a different level of talent," Barbee said. "He is an immediate difference maker for us along the frontline. He is a guy who has the ability to score the ball in a variety of ways inside and outside. He has a knack for being around the ball which makes him a great rebounder."
