Quick practice notes: Quarterback decision won't come until after spring ball

AUBURN, Ala. — The earliest Auburn will make a decision about narrowing its quarterback field won’t be until after spring practice is over. Even then, there’s no promise of a resolution coming soon.

The Tigers, who have split their quarterback reps all spring, plan to use all four of their signal callers in today’s A-Day scrimmage at Jordan-Hare Stadium, giving fans a glimpse at how Cam Newton, Neil Caudle, Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley run the offense.

“I think that it’s going to be really important because I just want to see them operate in front of a lot of people,” Auburn head coach Gene Chizik said. “I want to see them execute in more of a game setting than we’ve probably had all spring. I think for all four of them it’s going to be a nice test.”

Chizik said he’s not bothered by having four quarterbacks still in the mix.

“We’re not afraid to be in that position,” he said. “We would like to name one as soon as we can. We’re not feeling the pressure to do that. We think that we’ve rotated them the right way. We think we really gained enough information right now to be able to start working in the direction of paring that down when we’re ready.”

Auburn followed a similar plan last year. Caudle and Kodi Burns finished the spring as co-No. 1’s, only to watch Chris Todd earn the starting gig in August after returning from offseason shoulder surgery.

This spring’s focus has centered on Newton, a junior college transfer who is the presumed frontrunner, but coaches have been hesitant to dub him as Todd’s replacement.

Although today will be the fans’ first viewing of the quarterbacks this spring, Chizik said not to read too much into each player’s performance.

“This is kind of another practice,” he said. “Obviously, it is more game-type situation, which is good, but I wouldn’t read in too much whether one of them does great and one of them doesn’t do as well. ... We’re trying to look for consistency over all through 15 days and really that’s more of what our decision will be based off of.”

Here are some other quick notes from today's interviews:
  • The A-Day scrimmage won't necessarily be a straight-up game. Auburn will split into a blue and white team for the first half, in what will closely resemble a scrimmage. The second half will be offense vs. defense, with one quarter's worth of points going to the blue team and one quarter's worth of points going to the white team. Trust me, it was much more confusing when Gene explained it to us.
  • Chizik said the second-half format will allow coaches to mix and match personnel.
  • Position battles that are still on Chizik's mind: offensive line (that means right tackle), wide receiver (looking for a third option), safety (how the returning injured players will fit in), linebacker (Daren Bates and Harris Gaston sat out this spring because of injuries) and cornerback.
  • Wait, cornerback? Sure enough, Chizik commended T'Sharvan Bell for coming on this spring. Cornerbacks coach Phillip Lolley said "the light's coming on." I'm not sure if that means he'll compete for a starting spot (actually, I doubt he will), but he could certainly put himself in the mix for some playing time in a secondary lacking depth.
  • Not much has been written this spring about cornerback D'Antoine Hood, the only Columbus-area player on the roster. Lolley said Hood, a rising junior, is trying to catch up on reps lost last year due to ankle and hamstring injuries. Despite that, Lolley said Hood is on the two-deep, presumably in the mix with Bell and Anthony Morgan-Gulley.
