Barbee's assistants include Randall Dickey, Tony Madlock and Milt Wagner and director of basketball operations Mike Babul. All four were with him during his coaching stint at UTEP.
Here's a look at each of them, from the Auburn basketball release:
- Dickey spent six successful seasons at UTEP from 2004-10, five seasons at Oklahoma State from 1994-99 while helping lead the Cowboys to the 1995 Final Four, and four seasons at Washington State from 1999-2003. The Valley Springs, Ark., native started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Howard College from 1990-91 and Midland College from 1991-93. He began as a head coach at Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, Ark., from 1983-84 and was an assistant at Morrilton (Ark.) High from 1984-90.
- Madlock, whose coaching and recruiting played a key role during Barbee's four years at UTEP by recruiting 2010 C-USA Player of the Year Randy Culpepper and Arnett Moultrie, a 2009 C-USA All-Freshman Team selection, spent six of his nine years at Arkansas State as the assistant head coach prior to going to El Paso. The Memphis, Tenn., native helped Arkansas State to the 1998 Sun Belt Conference regular season championship and the 1999 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title as he recruited six junior college All-Americans to the school. After capping off a successful career at Memphis in helping the Tigers to the 1992 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight to go along with four straight postseason appearances, Madlock played one year of professional basketball in South America. He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Memphis Melrose High, where he spent three seasons.
- Wagner, whose coaching and recruiting was also vital in Barbee's four years at UTEP, is one of the most decorated members of the staff as he has won championships at the professional, collegiate and prep levels as a player while continuing that success as a four-year assistant at UTEP and a member of the Memphis staff. He followed Barbee to UTEP after serving as coordinator of basketball operations at Memphis for six seasons as the duo were an integral part of 148 victories and six straight postseason appearances, including the 2006 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. The Camden, N.J., native led Louisville to the 1986 NCAA Championship along with three Final Four berths while still ranking fifth in Cardinal history with 1,836 career points. A three-time All-Metro Conference selection, Wagner was chosen in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft, won the 1988 NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers and played for the Miami Heat in the 1990-91 season. His son, Dajuan, was selected sixth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2002 NBA Draft.
- Babul worked with Barbee all four years at UTEP and during the 2003-04 season at Memphis. He played under Barbee and Bruiser Flint at UMass from 1997-2000 in helping the Minutemen to two NCAA Tournament berths. He worked at Youngstown State as an assistant during the 2004-05 season before becoming the coordinator of basketball operations at Drexel for the 2005-06 season. The North Attleboro, Mass., native was a three-time Atlantic 10 Conference All-Defensive Team selection and a three-time A-10 All-Academic Team member.
