Chizik interviewed with Auburn

Jay Jacobs set aside some additional time on his Thursday trip to Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to reportedly interviewing TCU's Gary Patterson, he also interviewed Iowa State's Gene Chizik.

Here's a snippet from the Associated Press report:
Iowa State coach Gene Chizik is in the running for the Auburn job, Cyclones athletic director Jamie Pollard said Friday.

Pollard acknowledged that Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs recently contacted him to speak with Chizik about the Tigers vacancy. Pollard said in a statement released Friday that his understanding is that Chizik — the Tigers defensive coordinator from 2002-04 — has met with Auburn officials and is a serious candidate for the job.

Anybody else think the "serious candidate" portion of that statement seems ludicrous? Chizik was a fine coordinator at Auburn and Texas, but he's 5-19 in two years at Iowa State.

.....We haven't been the same on defense since Chizik left. To me, he was GREAT. No one we've EVER had could create mismatches up front, while maintaining solid coverage behind the jumping. It was amazing to watch.

.....Chizik would show one blitz, the QB would audible, then the front would jump again. You'd see the QB's eyes get really big, because AFTER he sent the protection wide, there'd be two defensive ends lined up over center. And somehow, you still had solid cover-two, with good run support, behind the crazy antics up front. It was really run to watch!

.....Chizik had it GOING ON, in 2004, and only gave up 11 points per game, against a schedule with five ranked opponents, 4 in the top ten.

.....Whether he can be a decent head coach is still debatable, but as a coordinator, he has to rank among the tops at Auburn!

You really can't compare Auburn and Iowa State.

If you are a talented kid, would you rather play for Texas, Oklahoma, or Iowa State? Heck, if you want to stay in-state, do you want to play for Iowa or Iowa State?

In college football, the talent level of the players is more important than the Xs and Os.

Plllleeeaaassssseeee hire Chizik. He doesn't want to be at ISU and we don't want him. No loyalty.

I agree Chizik was a good defensive coordinator, but shouldn't you have to have had some success as a head coach before being considered for a job like Auburn's?

Ron Prince was 17-20 at Kansas State and got "resigned."

Chizik's 5-19 and he's got a shot to go to Auburn?

That doesn't make sense. I don't care what level of talent you have at Iowa State. You've got to win some games to be a hot coaching commodity.

I agree with Andy on this one, Chizik has had no success at Iowa State whatsoever. Sure, he was a good DC at Auburn, but that does not mean he will be a good HC at Auburn.

For this same reason, I am also weary of Turner Gill, he has only had one semi-successfull year at Buffalo. I really think these guys need to prove themselves more, before they can coach at a top level school like Auburn.

Really, to my knowledge, Auburn hasn't interviewed anybody with a proven track record as a successful coach. Just guys with one good season or guys that are assistants. Where's the successfull and experienced candidates? I haven't heard of one viable candidate being interviewed that I am truly excited about.
