Iowa State AD: Chizik said he'd turn down Auburn job

Interesting article in the Des Moines Register today. Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said Gene Chizik told him twice that he would not accept the Auburn job, including the day he actually did accept the position.

A sampling:
Pollard expressed clear and consistent frustration that Chizik left the Cyclones after two seasons, five victories and the most recent 2-10 season.

“I know Jamie Pollard couldn’t do that to this place,” Pollard said during his first public comments about Chizik’s departure.
Could this be sour grapes? Sure. Are football coaches the most truthful creatures on earth? Absolutely not. Still, it's never a good sign when your former AD starts taking swipes at you 48 hours after you leave.

Iowa State's players, meanwhile, feel betrayed.

Schools just need to learn to take a coaches word with a grain of salt. Tommy Tuberville did the same thing to Ole Miss, Nick Saban did the same thing to Miami, Bobby Petrino did the same thing to Louisville and Atlanta, and the list goes on. Iowa State needs to stop crying and put on their big boy panties.

On the flip side, it gives me some reassurance about Chizik that Iowa State still wanted him after two horid seasons. Maybe Chizik has coaching talent that couldn't truly be tapped at such a horrible program as the one in Ames.

As an ISU fan, I'm certainly glad to see Chizik go. I didn't want him gone because of his performance -- I understand that building a program takes time. Instead, I am glad he's gone because he was never committed to our school or our players. This decision, and the way he handled it, shows that he wanted to use our program as a stepping stone for his career. That's simply not acceptable.

Fans, no matter the institution, deserve a coach that is as committed to the program as they are. That doesn't mean they can't leave and take new gigs. But they should do it in a way that reflects positively on themselves, the University, and the student-athletes.

In this regard, Chizik has unquestionably failed. We may not have the most prestigious program in the country, but we still deserve basic professionalism and respect.

It sounds like Chizik will be committed to Auburn's long-term success, so you folks may have better luck with him than we did. I hope for your sake that you do. But the lack of courtesy, professionalism, and honor displayed by Gene Chizik this past week has made him someone I'll be glad to cheer against for a long, long time.

Also, as an aside to Scott H.: I don't know what "big boy panties" are, but it's clear that you buy your underwear at a very different store than I.

Cyclonevh,

Perfect assessment of the ISU situation. As another long-suffering Cyclone fan, Chizik's betrayal of the fans, alums, and boosters will be felt long after his departure. If this is SOP for head coaches these days, it's a sad commentary for the current state of college football. Professionalism, integrity, and trust...these should be cornerstones of any program and Chizik certainly displayed his lack of all.

Chizik may be a good coach for Auburn, but who knows? Based on his history and recent actions at ISU, I'd give him a couple of seasons before he's sent packing. He's unproven as a head coach, and untrustworthy to boot. This isn't a great way to start a new job, especially in a high-profile program like Auburn.

Chizik has head coaching talent? When has he demonstrated this? If he was really interested in proving himself and showing he had talent, then he should have had the balls to stick with the ISU program and build it into a winner like he promised. Instead, he cuts and runs. Is this a quality you crave in a head coach?

Scott H...'Schools' also includes 'Auburn', and anyone connected to the program needs to learn to take anything Chizik tells them with an extra grain of salt. Otherwise, you might just turn into the ISU of the SEC :>)

We also aren't going to cry too much over Chizik's 5 - 19 ISU record, with 10 straight losses this season. Good luck with your big boy panties if Chizik wastes your program!
