It's official: Chizik hired as coach

Auburn finally released a statement Saturday night about the hiring of Gene Chizik.

A press conference is scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. It's closed to the public.

To tide you over, here's Chizik's statement from the release Saturday:
“Through my travels in coaching over the last 23 years, there’s one place that I’ve always wanted to return to and that is Auburn. The tradition of the Auburn football program combined with the passionate fans and their love for Auburn are second to none. My family and I are Auburn through and through, and look forward to being part of the Auburn family and community.

“I am dedicated to working tirelessly to win championships. We will not be outworked in any facet of the building process. I’m excited to get on the recruiting trail, meeting with the current players and reconnecting with past players. We want to develop young men into champions not only on the playing field, but in the classroom and in the community.”
Here's Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs' comment in the release:
“I’m extremely proud and excited to have Gene returning to Auburn to take over as head football coach of this program. I know that we have found the right fit for Auburn. Gene’s body of work during his 23 years in this profession is remarkable. He has a strong knowledge of this athletics program, this university and the community, and he knows how to be successful in the Southeastern Conference. He is a high-energy coach that is an outstanding motivator and demands a tough, physical style of football. I’m confident that Gene can build upon the foundation that has been established and make this a program that competes for championships on a consistent basis.”
Here's the entire release.

Was Mike Shula not available?

Chizik couldn't hack it in Ames and was looking for an escape route. I bet he shat himself when Jacobs offered him the job.

Iowa States records AND recruiting both got WORSE in the two years he was there. Horrid. He's not ready (and may never be) for SEC, for Saban, Miles, Urban, heck MSU comes off looking like geniuses with their hire!!!!!

Chizik will have the deck stacked against him. He'll officially be the WORST coach in the SEC when he starts. I hope he can change that quick, but right now everything points to another DISASTER of a season. Get ready for some dark days Auburn fans, I'm talking Doug Barfield dark. Mike Shula dark.

Auburn was the laughing stock of the SEC (if not the country) this year, and now we're the laughing stock again. GOOD JOB Jacobs!! Did Mr. Lowder wipe the dribble from your lip while you begged Chizik to come "home to momma"?

Morons.

ugh, this is the most bizarre and shocking hire Auburn could have made. His name wasn't even floated around seriously until like 2 days ago, even then it seemed like a long shot. I really thought Turner Gill was going to get hired (but he would have been almost as much of a risk as Chizik)

I'm going to give Chizik a chance, who knows, maybe Iowa State is just a completely hopeless program. It says a lot about the man that his players and the University appear so upset about his departure. It will be interesting to see who he hires as OC and DC, hopefully we will know by New Years day.

I was just really hoping Auburn would have hired an offensive minded coach, or at least a coach with a proven track record of winning...somewhere. Chizik is a big gamble.

A few points:

1. There weren't a lot of good coaches available to fill the Auburn spot. This hire may just be a band-aid until someone better comes along.

2. Auburn is a second-tier SEC football program. Tier 1 is LSU, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. They get the best recruits and the best coaches.

It's also about perception.
Tier 1 programs get to the national championship game, even with 2 losses. Auburn gets jack if they go 13-0. It's all about perception. It's not a question of whether or not AU can win the SEC title, but can they get to the national championship game.

3. Auburn has a PR problem, both in academics and in sports. NO ONE worth a darn wants to come to Auburn University because of the micro(mis)managment style used at Auburn by the powers-that-be.

Auburn has become a joke nationally. Who would want to come here when they could get fired after 1 bad season, or if they might get fired after 6 games?

4. There is no way in heck that Auburn will hire a black coach. And that is not a slam on the people at Auburn, it is a slam on the good ole boys who pull the strings.

If he was wanting to return to Auburn so bad and this is his dream job, then why the hell was he in such a hurry to bail on us before signing day and take a lateral position at Texas. This combined with the fact he had troubles with his OC and his quarterback quit the team spell eminent disaster for Auburn.

Not to mention 5-19.

There are those people saying we should look at his past record as a coordinator and the success he's had. Here's my problem with that: Norv Turner has been a pretty damn good offensive coordinator in the NFL. And what happened when he got his first job? He got canned because he wasn't head coach material. Then he went back to be an OC and again did great. So great he got hired by the Redskins. And where did that get him? Fired because he wasn't a good head coach. And again he went back to be the OC at San Diego only to become the head coach. People wondered why the guy was given another shot and he hasn't done anything to prove those naysayers wrong. Some guys just aren't meant to be head coaches. It looks like we're the Redskins and we just picked up our Norv Turner...

RJ - so was Alabama a Tier 1 school during the Mike Dubose - Franteets - Price - Shula era? or do I need to compare win loss records for you.

There's no such thing as 'tiers' in the SEC. Either you got the stuff or you don't.
