Men's hoops: South Carolina 68, Auburn 56

Auburn's seven-game winning streak came to a screeching halt this afternoon with a 68-56 loss to South Carolina. I did not travel to the game (it's a tough economy, folks), but here are some stats of interest (note: these are unofficial stats from ESPN.com):
  • Auburn (10-5, 0-1 SEC) had 24 turnovers; South Carolina (12-2, 1-0 SEC) had 18. Sounds like an ugly game.
  • Auburn shot 36.7 percent; South Carolina shot 46.4 percent. Not going t win many games with those numbers.
  • Although Gamecocks guard Devan Downey had an off night, going 4-for-14 from the field for 9 points, South Carolina got 27 from guard Zam Fredrick.
  • Auburn guard DeWayne Reed scored a game-high 21 points. Nobody else in the starting lineup scored more than seven.
  • Forward Korvotney Barber grabbed 18 rebounds. Nobody else on the Tigers had more than six.
  • Forward Lucas Hargrove, a Pontiac. S.C., native who was playing in a homecoming of sorts, had a rough night, finishing with three points, five rebounds and eight turnovers.
  • Forward Johnny Lett did not play for academic reasons, according to multiple reports. It is not known if the 6-foot-9, 210-pound junior college transfer will miss more time.
  • Although Lett averages just 3.6 points and 4.1 rebounds, he is a big body in the post who is not afraid to play some defense. If he's out for a considerable amount of time, Auburn could be scrambling for post defenders.
  • Auburn plays host to Florida on Wednesday at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. Tip-off is 8 p.m. EST. I'll be there, hopefully with a much better account than this.
