Minnesota coach Tim Brewster confirmed today that Ted Roof has accepted the defensive coordinator position at Auburn, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
"Our defense improved a great deal under Coach Roof this past season," Brewster said. "Good coaches are always going to be in demand and I wish Ted the best of luck in the future.
UPDATE: Just did a little stat checking on Roof, who didn't have the kind of frontline defense you would expect for someone who just got hired by Auburn.
Look at these stats, though. Minnesota was BRU-TAL on defense the year before Roof got there:
2007
119th total defense (518.7 ypg)
114th rushing defense (229.3 ypg)
115th passing defense (289.3 ypg)
Turnovers – 14 forced
2008
79th total defense (383.6 ypg)
69th rushing defense (143.3 ypg)
93rd pass defense (289.3 ypg)
Turnovers – 31 forced, tied for 11th nationally
I wouldn't look too much into Roof's time at Duke either, where he was 6-45 in four-plus years as head coach. I covered a lot of Blue Devils game during that time. That is a hopeless situation there, regardless of how David Cutcliffe fared in his first year.
As Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator, Roof was nominated in 2000 for the Frank Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach. So it appears with a little talent, Roof knows how to do something with it.

Roof as DC is a great hire. He was supposed tobe the DC at Notre Dame under George O'Leary... then O'Leary's resume issues hit the news and Duke was able to get Roof.
The difference between Roof & Cutcliffe at Duke is University support. The school absolutely-positively gave Roof NOTHING to work with.
Now with Cutcliffe the University is finally gotten behind the football program and it will turn around.
ROOF WILL DO A GREAT JOB. HE WILL MAKE THE SCHOOL PROUD.
Plus he is simply a great man.
