I wrote a story for today's newspaper about Auburn hoping its two-game losing streak isn't the start of a trend. Here's how it starts:

AUBURN, Ala. — Two straight losses has Auburn nation on edge, the thoughts of last year’s epic collapse still fresh in its mind.

Is it a mere bump in the road or the first signs that the wheels are about to fall off?

The answer was unanimous at the Auburn athletic complex Tuesday.

“This year we’re a lot more together. We’re a family,” running back Ben Tate said. “We believe in each other and we believe in these coaches. I can’t see us having a big collapse and spiraling down and out of control like we did last year. I can’t see that happening.”

The Tigers (5-2, 2-2 SEC) are trying to rally the troops after consecutive losses to Arkansas and Kentucky, two teams considered in the middle tier of the conference.

All the things that helped Auburn thrive in the first five weeks — a fast-paced offense, a downfield passing attack, an opportunistic defense — have disappeared the last two weeks, the first crisis of Gene Chizik’s tenure as on the Plains.
