Tuesday links (10/20)

Busy day of interviews at the Auburn athletic center today, so let's get right to the links:
  • LSU got back to the basics last week, using officials during practice and trying to eliminate the penalties that it had against Florida, writes Glenn Guilbeau of the Shreveport Times.
  • LSU runs the "check-with-me" audible offense that many teams in college use, writes Gary Laney of the Advocate of Baton Rouge. You might better know this as the annoying "all 11 guys get in a crouch ready to snap the ball before standing up and looking over at the coach" offense.
  • In a bit of gamesmanship, Alabama denied Tennessee's request to wear orange in Tuscaloosa this week, writes Mike Strange of the Knoxville News Sentinel. That would have looked cool if both teams wore their home uniforms. It's too bad it won't happen.
  • "Auburn’s confidence: The more Auburn won in September, the more confidently the Tigers played. Even when they gave up a lot of yardage on defense (See the West Virginia game), they found a way to force six turnovers and win the game. The constant was Gus Malzahn’s balanced defense. The Tigers were running it when they needed to and passing it when they needed to. Now, on the heels of back-to-back losses, they’re not doing anything real well or real confidently. The 21-14 home loss to Kentucky last week makes you wonder where this club is emotionally right now. The lack of depth in key spots can’t be ignored, and it’s only going to get worse from here with no bye week in sight. The Tigers take on an LSU team this Saturday that should be rested after getting a bye last week. Another loss, and things could really go south for Gene Chizik’s club."
  • Forgot this yesterday: ESPN.com bowl projections. Schlabach dropped Auburn to the Liberty Bowl against Houston. Bruce Feldman put the Tigers in the Music City Bowl against North Carolina.
  • Police have made an arrest in connection with the murder of UConn cornerback Jasper Howard, writes Mitch Abramson of the New York Daily News. (It's not an arrest for the killing, however.) The two players who were with Howard when he died might be too shaken up to play this week, writes Zac Boyer of the Hartford Courant.
