The Auburn women's basketball team fell short in the SEC tournament quarterfinals today, losing to second-seeded Kentucky 65-54 in Duluth, Ga.
That leaves the Tigers at 15-16 this season, one win shy of being eligible for the WNIT, which requires teams to have a .500 record or better.
(UPDATE: This just in from beat writer Andrew Gribble of the Opelika-Auburn News, who happens to be in Duluth for the game: Auburn WILL NOT accept an invitation to the new, 16-team Women's Basketball Invitational if it is invited. That officially ends the Tigers' season.)
The Tigers couldn't duplicate their first-round upset of Florida. They committed 20 turnovers, leading to 22 Kentucky points. The Wildcats held a 14-0 advantage on fastbreak points.
After going 8-for-14 from 3-point range against the Gators, Auburn was just 2-for-11 Friday. Morgan Toles led Auburn with 13 points. Alli Smalley, coming off a career-best 29-point effort, finished with 11.
SEC Player of the Year Victoria Dunlap led Kentucky (24-6) with 24 points.
