Jeff Lebo's unemployment didn't last long. The recently ousted Auburn coach is set to be hired by East Carolina, according to an ESPN report. This is pending approval of the school's board of trustees this afternoon.
Lebo went 96-93 at Auburn but was fired a week and a half ago after the Tigers wrapped up a 15-17 season, his fourth losing season in six years on the Plains. He is owed $1.5 million from Auburn for the buyout of his contract.
Lebo would replace Mack McCarthy, who is taking an administrative job at East Carolina.
This hire has all sorts of ACC undertones. East Carolina athletics director Terry Holland was the head coach at Virginia at the same time Lebo was an All-ACC point guard for Dean Smith at North Carolina from 1986-89.
The Pirates went 10-21 last year and were 4-12 in the Conference USA. They haven't had a winning record since the 1996-97 season and haven't made the NCAA tournament since 1993.
