Early practice observations: Quarterback Cam Newton passes the eye test

Just got back from watching the first part of today's first spring practice. Here are few observations:
  • Quarterback Cameron Newton is wearing No. 2 and certainly looks every bit of his 6-foot-6, 247 pounds. He definitely passes the eye test. (It's hard to tell in my hastily taken iPhone photo above, but he's on the far right.)
  • Quarterback Tyrik Rollison, as expected, was not on the roster. He said on his Facebook page last month that he was transferring. Looks like he was serious.
  • Saw a drill late in our viewing session with three quarterbacks throwing the ball -- Newton, Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley. Neil Caudle was with the special teams as the holder. He did, however, re-join the group a little later.
  • Fullback John Douglas was not at practice nor on the roster. Also no Jason King. Both were arrested for DUIs in December. We'll get more details on this later.
  • Other noticeable absentees from the roster include PK Morgan Hull and OL Darrell Roseman.
  • Junior college transfer Brandon Mosley was working with the first group at right tackle. Roszell Gayden was with the twos. Of course, this was just one drill, so don't read too much into it.
  • Guard Mike Berry was out there but not participating. Jorell Bostrom and Bart Eddins took his place with the ones.
  • Aairon Savage was back on the field looking spry. Missing two years will have that effect. Mike McNeil was out there as well.
  • Safety/possible linebacker Daren Bates was in an orange jersey but not participating. I saw Zac Etheridge in the football complex but he did not dress out. I can't imagine him taking much contact, if any, this spring.
  • New name alert: Anthony Gulley apparently is going by Anthony Morgan now. He was also wearing white and working on the defensive side of the ball.
