Jalen Steele released from letter of intent

Guard Jalen Steele has been released from his letter of intent to play basketball at Auburn. The news was first reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The 6-foot-3 Steele, from Knoxville, Tenn.,was named Tennessee's 2009-10 Class AA Mr. Basketball after averaging 24 points a game last season. He led Fulton High to state titles in 2008 and '09.

Steele was signed last fall by Jeff Lebo but was on the fence after Lebo's dismissal and Auburn's hiring of Tony Barbee. Steele met with Barbee on March 29 and decided he didn't fit with Barbee's vision of the program.

Steele has drawn interest from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, UCLA and Cincinnati.

His departure gives Auburn one more scholarship to work with when the spring signing period begins Wednesday.

I don't understand why someone "doesn't fit" with a coach that has a more successful track record. Oh well. Andy, could you give us an update on the prospects who are still on the board for 2010?

I know we need some room for Barbee to get his own players on board, but I don't think losing a Mr. Basketball winner is a good way to start clearing out space.

Let's put it this way. If Barbee had really wanted him he would have kept him. We need bigger shooting guards than 6'2, IMO. I see Sullivan moving to PG which is a good move. He played it in HS.
