Baseball: Kentucky outlasts Auburn 8-7 in back-and-forth doubleheader opener

AUBURN, Ala. — Kentucky used a three-run rally in the eighth to top Auburn 8-7 in the first game of a doubleheader at Plainsman Park on Sunday.

The back-and-forth game, which was resumed from Saturday, featured five ties and four lead changes. It lasted four hours.

Auburn (26-14, 9-8 SEC) took a 7-6 lead in the seventh after RBI doubles by Justin Hargett and Trent Mummey.

But the bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Kentucky tied the game at seven on Chris Bisson's eighth-inning RBI single off Auburn closer Austin Hubbard (3-2). After Bisson stole two bases, he scored the eventual winning run on an error by first baseman Hunter Morris.

The Tigers had two runners on in the ninth but Mummey flew out to the warning track in center field to end the game. The teams combined to leave 32 runners on base.

Auburn pitchers gave up 14 hits, walked 10 batters and hit four more. Kentucky also stole eight bases.

The second game will start around 3:50 p.m. ET.
