Cornerback Walt McFadden taken in fifth round of NFL Draft by Oakland Raiders

Auburn cornerback Walt McFadden was selected by the Oakland Raiders with the seventh pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft Saturday. He was the 138th overall pick.

McFadden was the second Auburn player selected. Running back Ben Tate went to the Houston Texans in the second round with the 58th overall pick.

It continued a trend for the Tigers. Auburn has had a defensive back selected in five of the last six years. McFadden joins Jerraud Powers (2009), Jonathan Wilhite (2008), David Irons (2007) and Carlos Rogers (2005) in that group.

McFadden was the 19th cornerback selected in the draft.

He led the team with six interceptions last season, with two in the Tigers' Outback Bowl victory against Northwestern, one of which he returned 100 yards for a touchdown. He finished his career with 87 tackles, nine interceptions and three touchdowns.

Although McFadden did not earn an invitation to the NFL Combine in February, he had an impressive showing at Auburn's Pro Day, running a 4.39-second time in the 40-yard dash. He also measured in bigger than expected, at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds.
