Baseball: Walk-off HR lifts Vandy over Auburn

Vanderbilt's Aaron Westlake hit a walk-off home run off Auburn's Grant Dayton to lift the No. 18 Commodores to a 3-2 victory in Nashville on Sunday.

The win gave Vanderbilt (29-9, 8-7 SEC) the series victory and dropped No. 23 Auburn to 24-13 overall and 8-7 in the SEC.

Dayton (4-2) was bidding for Auburn's second straight complete game. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five. He retired 10 straight before Westlake's homer.

Vanderbilt starter Taylor Hill gave up two runs on seven hits in 8 2/3 innings. He struck out seven. Reliever Richie Goodeneow (2-0) earned the win after getting one out in the ninth.

Trent Mummey hit his fifth home run in nine games for Auburn, which finished with seven hits.

The Tigers return home for their next five games. They host Troy on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET before welcoming Kentucky for a three-game series next weekend.

I still like the position this team is in compared to the last 6 years! 8-7 and 3 games better than the #8 spot for the SEC Tourney through the halfway point. With 3 of the last 5 series at home I like Auburn's chances of being no worse than 15-15 and more likely 16-14 or 17-13 going into the SEC Tourney!

Also considering our toughest opponent left is Arkansas that's another BIG plus. Auburn has already faced some of the toughest in the conference. We're 3-3 between the USC and LSU series.

Kentucky, the next series at home next weekend, is 5-10. MSU is 5-10 and Tennessee is 4-11. The toughest two series left is Arkansas (12-3) and Ole Miss (also 8-7).

It's a shame Drayton had to lose, he pitched a great game. The pitch that kid hit for the walkoff homer was a good one, up and inside, out of the strike zone. 99 times out of 100 that's a foul ball.

Anyway, we didn't get swept up there and that's the good news!
