AUBURN, Ala. — With dental school in his plans last August, Jordan Anderson strolled into the office of Dr. Paul Harris, Auburn’s associate director for national prestigious scholarships, just to see what kind of financial aid might be in his wheelhouse.
Harris scanned Anderson’s lengthy résumé, noting the pre-dentistry major’s 3.91 GPA and All-American swimming credentials, and thought big — Rhodes Scholarship big.
“I went back a couple days later and said, ‘Let’s get the ball rolling,’” Anderson said. “If I don’t get it, then I haven’t lost anything.”
Anderson did get it. The senior swimmer was awarded one of 32 Rhodes Scholarships late last month, the fourth Auburn student to receive the honor and the first since 1980. He’ll begin graduate work in a master’s degree program in global health science at the University of Oxford in England next September.
“It was just shock,” Anderson said after finding out.
