Sam Houston State manhandles Auburn 107-89

AUBURN, Ala. — Grasping for an explanation after Auburn’s ugly 107-89 loss to Sam Houston State, guard Tay Waller eventually decided a lack of effort was the biggest culprit in the Tigers’ most embarrassing defeat to date.

Coach Jeff Lebo disagreed.

“I don’t think it was so much an effort thing,” he said. “I think they manhandled us.”

Sam Houston State (7-3) hammered Auburn inside and out, getting a career-high 34 points from forward Gilberto Clavell and making 15 3-pointers in its first victory against an SEC opponent in 13 tries.

It was the most points Auburn (5-6) had allowed in over 15 years, dating back to a 117-105 loss to No. 3 Arkansas in 1994.

Here are a few notes and quotes after the game ...
  • Lebo didn't pull any punches ripping into his team afterward. “We’re young, we’ve got a lot of new guys, but our attention to detail is not particularly good,” he said. “We went through everything in two days of what they do and we just went out there and looked like we didn’t do anything. I mean, I might as well have not have even watched the tape or had practice for two days. That’s what it looked like out there.”
  • The Tigers haven't lost six non-conference games since starting the 1989-90 season 2-6.
  • Clavell crushed Auburn in the post. He made 14 of 17 shots and got Brendon Knox in immediate foul trouble. Knox played nine minutes and scored four points before fouling out. “We thought in the game we could go inside to Knox,” Lebo said. “That was our game plan. Our game plan has to change a lot when he gets three fouls in a minute and can’t guard anybody.”
  • Bearkats guard Corey Allmond made six of Sam Houston State's 15 3-pointers. He finished with 25 points.
  • Sam Houston State, which led by 16 at halftime and as many as 25 midway through the second half, did it all without starting point guard Ashton Mitchell, who rolled his ankle in the first half. Backup Drae Murray replaced him and, despite suffering from a toothache, finished with a game-high 10 assists and no turnovers.
  • Auburn got 19 points from DeWayne Reed and 18 from Frankie Sullivan. Waller added 15 and Lucas Hargrove had 11. Nobody else scored more than five.
  • Waller might have summed it up the game best: “Tonight, they just showed us up."

The play of the team is a reflection of the coach. It's been long enough. Time to find a new coach to recruit to the new arena. Good luck, Jeff.

I'm usually the last person to give up on a coach, but enough is enough.

He's been there long enough to recruit his type of players, he's had support from the administration, and yet year after year the embarrassing losses keep piling up.

Hopefully, Auburn and Coach Lebo will both find a better future after they part ways.

Straw meet Camel's back.

Embarrassing.

Time for Lebo to go.

Lebo was a great player at UNC. But great players seldom make for good coaches.

I attended a game last year, and was astounded to see that the team didn't understand how to play the game. They were athletic and had talent, but had absolutely no clue how to work as a team or run an offense. Pathetic, even at a football school.
