Thursday links (12/10)

Had to cut this extremely short today, but here are a few links anyway:
  • Texas coach Mack Brown got a raise, making his annual salary $5 million through the end of his contract, which runs through 2016. He doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon, which makes you wonder what coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp must be thinking. A commenter asked on a previous post if I think this will trigger a salary race in college football. It always does. Do you think the Crimson Tide will sit idly by with Nick Saban making less than Brown, especially if Alabama beats Texas in Pasadena? Absolutely not.
  • Clay Travis at Fan House says Mack Brown deserves some second-guessing after the way he mismanaged the clock at the end of the Big 12 title game.

.....I daresay the writers up in South Bend really don't know Auburn history. They describe Terry Bowden's tenure as the "NCAA violation-infested mess Terry Bowden left behind." Bowden would be the first to dispute this, since he was left cleaning up the Eric Ramsey NCAA mess left behind by the Pat Dye administration.

.....Some folks even believe that Terry Bowden was run off because he WOULDN'T cheat. There were problems with the football team in 1998, but NCAA rules violations weren't one of them!

Tuberville would not work out at ND...If he routinely fail to get kids into AU, there is no chance in hell he could get kids into ND...I believe Tommy's failures and laziness on the recruiting trail the last few years has hurt his chances of landing a job...Maybe AU was smart in blaming him for his lack of recruiting...He hurt us, so we hurt his rep.

I wonder how much these coaches are going to be making here in 3-4 years. the way they're going, it's going to cost a school about 10+ million just to field a quality coaching staff. i'm betting that Saban/Meyer/Stoops wil be clearing about $6.5m sometime within the next few years. and coaches like muschamp, fischer, and other high-quality assistants will be getting paid around or over $1m it's going to be crazy how much a coaching staff will cost in the next couple of years.

Andy, I actually was thinking "at least they aren't passing another tax bill".

I agree that coaching salaries are ridiculous. But the amount of money these football programs is ridiculous too. I think read somewhere that the football revenue at Texas has quadrupled since Mack Brown has been there. Why not reward the man that has been a major reason for that influx of money?

Andy, what's your take on why Tuberville hasn't really been named a candidate in coaching positions? I thought we'd hear his name for Louisville and Virginia, at least.
