Live blogging Gene Chizik's teleconference

Gene Chizik has spoken. Here's what he said:
  • On striking a balance on focus and having fun: "Every week will be business as usual. I think everyone understands if you continue to win, what will be at stake next week."
  • Said team still tries to have fun all the time. Keeps things loose. "I don't think you change the nature of how you do things or how you proceed because the circumstances are different."
  • On four SEC games going down to the wire: "I think it's really neat we've found different ways. All the wins have been great. I've been proud of our team the way we won."
  • Thinks it's rare to win a game with a 19-play drive. Said you can point out to the team the different ways they have won. "We try to present as many circumstances as we can at the end of practices, but that one's a little different."
  • "Everybody's kind of gotten a piece of the puzzle at the end of the game in terms of who was going to win it."
  • On Terrell Zachery's fumble on the kickoff. The reverse was called. Chizik said it was all walled up and ready to go. T-Zach and Demond Washington bobbled the exchange, leading to the fumble.
  • On Darvin Adams: "He's very competitive and when the game's on the line, he wants the ball in his hand. ... He's found ways to make not routine catches, very difficult catches in my opinion."
  • Gives Darvin the credit, not the coaches' "We'd like to say it's coaching, but it's not coaching at all."
  • Thinks team is getting better as a defense. "I think our defense has stepped up to the plate against some really good offenses."
  • "This probably will be the biggest challenge we've faced to date in terms of quarterbacks and receivers."
  • Said covering underneath routes will be important. Thought team tackled OK against Kentucky.
  • On Bobby Petrino: "I think that he's got a great, great feel for defenses. I think that he sets things up. He's got a great play-action where it's hard to tell whether it's run or pass. He's one of the best in the country."
In a bizarre twist, we now go to the phone portion. Let's see what gets asked:
  • Hey, a confidence question. We've already covered this. Read his answer above about winning in different ways.
  • Poll question. Auburn is the highest ranked SEC team. Chizik seems unimpressed. "I still feel like we're in search for a really, really good all-around four quarter game. I don't think we've had that yet."
  • On QB Cam Newton: "I don't think he's surprised me. I think he's played well." Great competitor, getting better every week, etc., etc.
  • "It's fun to watch him play."
Back to the local beat hack portion of Chizik:
  • LB Eltoro Freeman is "day-by-day" with an injury. Apparently he's just banged up.
  • Disappointed by the kickoff team. Not enough hangtime. Not great coverage. "We started with some bad field position that we can't do moving forward."
  • Steven Clark punted. "We're always going to play who we think is the best guy."
  • Said penalties will be addressed, especially the personal fouls. Said guys have to be aware when guys get near the sideline.
  • Didn't sound thrilled about the second call against Zac Etheridge. Asked if he sought clarification from the ref, Chizik said, 'I didn't ask."
And that's a wrap.
