To tide you over, I wrote a five questions story for today's newspaper. Here's how it starts:
AUBURN, Ala. — Since he was introduced as Auburn’s new head coach, Gene Chizik has made his immediate goals well known.Read the rest of it here. Mild spoiler alert: here are five question marks (which really makes it six if you count the opening as a question too).
He wants to reinforce the roster through recruiting. He wants to return the Tigers to a physical brand of football. And, most of all, he wants to return the team to its 2004 level, when, with Chizik as defensive coordinator, Auburn finished the season with a13-0 record.
The question is, how much time will Auburn nation give Chizik and Co.?
Patience hardly has been a virtue for Tigers fans lately (ask Tommy Tuberville or Tony Franklin), exacerbated by the recent success of Nick Saban’s crew in Tuscaloosa. For a group not used to sub-.500 seasons, last year’s 5-7 record was hard to take.
Enter Chizik, who has won over the fan base by hiring an energetic coaching staff and recruiting with gusto this offseason. But the 2009 Tigers haven’t done anything on the field, where they ultimately will be judged.
