Men's hoops: Tigers hope to gain ground in weak SEC West

The Auburn men's basketball team goes on the road for a game at Ole Miss tonight at 8 ET. Here's how my story for today's newspaper starts:

AUBURN, Ala. — Five losses in six games hasn’t done anything to temper Auburn coach Jeff Lebo’s praise of Ole Miss.

“They are as talented as anybody in the West,” he said.

Although meant it as a compliment, it is perhaps more a stinging indictment of the SEC’s weaker division.

Auburn (13-14, 4-8) will attempt to climb back to .500 when it travels to C.M. Smith Coliseum for an 8 p.m. game against Ole Miss today, the first of four remaining games against SEC West opponents that will round out the seeding for next month’s conference tournament.

Any thoughts on the rumors of Tyrik Rollison leaving Auburn?

I'll bite Lucky. My first guess would be grades. Cam Newton coming doesn't really affect him because he would have had a couple of years to prove himself afterwards. I hope it's Clint Moseley. I hope that kid has been so strong that Rollison didn't think he had a chance to compete. I always had questions about how his height would affect him (6' I think). Moseley's pretty big and Newton will be the second tallest QB in the country behind Mallet at Arkansas.

I'm checking into the Rollison situation. Didn't post the Facebook thing because I'm generally skeptical of a lot of stuff that appears on those sites, although his second message was unambiguous.

If he's leaving, I don't know if it's necessarily about grades. His suspension in December made no mention of grades (unlike the one give to Eric Smith, for which grades were specifically mentioned).

I agree with AUsome04 about Moseley. He seems to have his head on straight and has some good physical tools. Plus the coaches, both on defense and offense, have had good things to say about him.

Of course, the point is moot this year, since Newton appears to be the frontrunner for the job.

It seems odd that he wouldn't wait for spring practice to be over before deciding whether to move on, but he may be homesick for Texas. Everything I've heard suggests that it will be a Newton / Trotter battle for the starting job. I hate to see a talent like Rollison walk out the door, but we are in on some good QB prospects for the next recruiting class.
