AD Jay Jacobs: 'Cam has been and continues to be completely honest with us'

Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs has released a statement regarding Cam Newton:
“In the past 24 hours, a lot of allegations have surfaced that date back two years ago and further. These allegations and rumors about Cam Newton are unfortunate and sad because they seem intent on tearing down the reputation of a young man who has done everything we’ve asked him to do. Cam has been and continues to be completely honest with us.

"Cam is, by all accounts, a great kid. Any discussion of academic records is a clear violation of federal privacy laws. We will not go down that path or stoop to that level as others have apparently done. We will, however, emphatically say that Cam is eligible to play football at Auburn University both academically and athletically. I am proud of this young man and the progress he has made to be a better football player and a better man. We are truly blessed that Cam is a part of the Auburn family, and we support him 100 percent.”

We may not like all the information that is out there about Auburn, but you wouldn't be doing your job if all you reported by unicorns and fairy dust. I certainly appreciate this unbiased coverage.War Eagle

Thank you for the statement. Someone at AUBURN has to stand up for this kid. It is a shame what is going on right now.

Man, Anonymous, you can't seem to make up your mind about me.

ESPN has certainly dove into desperate and biased reporting as of late. Georgia, Alabama, and USC/UF need to be prepared for one large, athletic, and angry super star coming their way.

I am glad that you are making a statement here. I however really think this statement should be more "in the face" of the naysayers. Someone has to stop this smear campaign. Someone needs to challenge the "powers that be" to stand up and put a stop to all of this nonsense.

lol Andy. Don't sweat it man, somebody has to report what's going on and it's not like you're saying these things about Cam. I just look at this as what happens when things are going good for your university, remember they harped on mark ingram's daddy once he became a heisman contender last year constantly.....long as Cam continues to play ball, i don't think any of these accusations/reports will go anywhere, though i do feel like we can go ahead and pack Cam's bags cause why come back to this type of media atmosphere when you can go get paid and not have to hear about it.

Thanks, Andy, for keeping me updated down here in Florida. I have to admit, living with an hour of Gainesville, the first person I thought of when the first allegations arose last week was Urban Meyer. I wouldn't be surprised if this is all his doing.

Even as an Alabama fan, I must admit I'm getting sick of what appears to be a witch-hunt by national media staff writers looking for recognition as being 'hard-hitting journalists.'

I also don't recall it being against the rules to transfer to another school if you are having troubles, whether they are on or off the field, at another university.

Give the kid a break and let him play football. If the allegations regarding the recruiting turn out to be true, then there will be retroactive punishment. If the allegations regarding the cheating at school turn out to be true, then someone at Florida is going to be in trouble with the Feds for leaking it.

But don't persecute the guy before anything's been proven. What an embarrassment for our entire conference!

Is it possible to look into the college background of the writer pushing this garbage? I wonder if he had any errors in judgment. John 8:7

Bottom line is Cam is in the national spotlight and these media outlets are **profiting** from all of this sensationalism that has nothing to do with Cam's athletic skills. The NCAA won't allow merchants to profit from the use of player's names or likeness; The rules should be similar for the media. I don't know how it would be possible in terms of free speech, but the NCAA should prohibit media outlets from publishing information about these college student athletes that isn't obtained from the University, the NCAA or official things like crime reports. ie. Cam Newton's laptop theft case was a police report so that's fair game, the pay-for-play thing would be fair game when the NCAA releases details about the investigation. The academic issues would not be fair game unless UF chose to release the actual records, which I'm pretty sure they have privacy policies against that.

I see nothing in that statement that denies he cheated at Florida.

So Andy, what's your opinion if you were to editorialize everything so far? You've been around Cam Newton more than any of us and have the opportunity/sources to find information. What does this all mean for Cam, for Auburn? Is this really a smear campaign or is Cam Newton a thug that's pulled the wool over our eyes with his athletic ability?

I think this is as Hillary said, "a right wing conspiracy" against this young man. More media BS!

More like a bitter LEFT-WING CONSPIRACY liberals squirm when someone excels at anything. They have the goal of making everyone equally miserable. They own the misery index.Nothing is equal.
JEALOUSLY SHOWS ITS UGLY FACE!

"He who is without sin, cast the first stone". All these naysayers and Cam/Auburn haters have NEVER done anything wrong? Ever? Whether Cam did cheat or not is in the past as are all our wrongdoings IF we seek forgiveness
and redemption. I am happy in the conviction that the God I serve (and Cam, too) is in the forgiving and redeeming business. And I pray for those who are in the business of slander and negative judgement.

I wish the media would look into who leaked this about Cam and the cheating since it would be a federal offense! That would shut some people up! I am not saying what is true or not because I don't know (just like the media doesn't know) but I know that this young man was humbled out there in TX and is really trying to do the right things. Let's go after those responsible with just as much gusto and they are going after Cam! WAR EAGLE!
