Newton focused on Chattanooga, not NFL talk

Cam Newton may well go to play in the NFL next season, but he said now is not the time to think about it.

Newton, one of the leading candidates for the Heisman Trophy, said he will come to a decision about whether he returns for his senior year once this season is over.

"There's a time and place for everything," Newton said Tuesday. "I'm not sitting up here and giving you a definite decision on how I'm feeling right now. How I'm feeling right now is UT-Chattanooga."

Newton was asked if his game is good enough for the NFL.

"That's not to me," he said. "My opinion doesn't really go far when it comes to talking about the next level, because I'm still a college athlete."

Newton said he would think about the future after the season.

"I'm trying to partake and trying to grasp something that hasn't been done here in a long time," Newton said. "And we have a chance right now to seize the moment and we can't have those type of selfish thoughts to run through our mind, because it can be contagious and we don't want that around here.

"You said the end of the year an that's when I'm going to do. After Week 9, we're still trying to do great things around here. Take one day at a time and play Auburn football."

I really hope he stays. Ok, so it's a little selfish but I hope for HIM that he stays. There is so much value in having a college education and hopefully he will realize that before making a snap decision. He's not going to be in any worse of a position if he waits one year to enter the draft.

What a great leader. He realizes that it takes more than just a great team to win championships. It also takes great focus. As long as they concentrate on one game at a time, and leave it all on the field in each game, this team can reach the ultimate goal.

Since he reshirted one year, won't he be able to graduate fairly soon? It seems like football players are always on the fast track to graduate anyway.

From his perspective, I can't see a lot of compelling reasons to stay.

From my perspective, PLLLEAAASSEEE stay!!!!!

Too inaccurate to play QB in the pros...

Anonymous: "Too inaccurate to play QB in the pros." I suppose inaccuracy is how he got to be the third-ranked passing QB in the nation right now. Really, guy, if you want to comment at least make a comment that isn't clearly false.

As far as Newton staying, if he's projected to go in the top half of the first round he'd be crazy not to go.

I'll appreciate the great athlete and great young person he is while he's here and wish him the best of luck when he does leave.
