Men's hoops completes fall signing class

Tony Barbee's first fall signing class is complete after Auburn announced Monday that center Willy Kouassi and forward Bernard Morena signed letters of intent.

The Birmingham Central Park teammates, who are originally from the Ivory Coast, join Memphis, Tenn., guard Cedrick McAfee in the Tigers' three-man early signing class for 2011-12.

"They understand what winning is about, and I have always said winning breeds winning, and that's what we like to recruit," Barbee said.

Barbee said the team might add more players in the latter part of the recruiting season.

Kouassi, a 6-foot-10 center, is ranked 87th nationally by Rivals.com and is the 11th best center in the country. He averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds last year for Birmingham Central Park Christian.

"Willy brings us a bigger presence along the frontline who can rebound and really block shots," Barbee said. "He is very athletic for his size at 6-10 and has a high motor and high energy level. He has to get better on the offensive end of the floor, but he can score down there given the opportunity."

Morena, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 10 points last year.

"He gives us a versatile inside-out player who can play on the wing," Barbee said. "He can play from the post. He can shoot it. He can score around the basket. He has long arms, and he is very athletic so he will be a very good defender on the perimeter with his length."

McAfee, who is the No. 74 recruit overall and the No. 19 guard by Rivals , signed 11 days ago. He averaged 18 points per game last year after transferring to Melrose High in Memphis.

"He is going to add a lot in terms of his versatility and his ability to play multiple positions because of his athleticism at 6-3 and his skill to be able to score the ball and also run a team," Barbee said.

Did he just basically say he won't recruit a good talent that happened to get stuck at a bad school?

I think he just wanted to throw "winning" as a buzzword out there since Auburn won't do much of it this season.
