Demond Washington, Mike Dyer earn SEC honors

Demond Washington and Mike Dyer got in on the weekly SEC award bonanza Monday.

Washington earned co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors after Auburn's 51-31 win at Ole Miss, while Dyer was one of three players to share the Rookie of the Week award.

Washington, a senior from Tallassee, Ala., returned five kickoffs for 176 yards, including a 95-yarder for a touchdown, the second of his career.

He broke Auburn's single-season kickoff return yardage record set by Tristan Davis in 2006. Washington has 806 kick return yards this season.

He also made six tackles and intercepted a pass.

Dyer, a freshman from Little Rock, Ark., ran for a career-high 180 yards on 21 carries against the Rebels. He scored on a 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

He shared the award with Florida's Trey Burton and South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore.

Auburn has had at least one SEC award winner every week this season. Here's the full list:
  • QB Cam Newton: Offensive POTW against Arkansas State, South Carolina, Arkansas, LSU
  • DT Nick Fairley: Defensive POTW against Mississippi State, D-line POTW against Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas, LSU
  • LB Josh Bynes: Defensive POTW against Clemson
  • DT Mike Blanc: D-line POTW against South Carolina
  • PK Wes Byrum: Special teams POTW against Kentucky
  • CB Demond Washington: Special teams POTW against Ole Miss
  • RB Mike Dyer: ROTW against Ole Miss

Leading in kick returns yards is like having a record number of tackles on defense... they both suggest the other team is having success on offense. A greatest defensive team on the planet only sees one kick-off a game.

Still, you could tell last year Auburn's kick return unit was going to be salty under the current regime... but they should be with so much practice.

Demond has done it on 30 returns this year. Davis had 28 when he set the record in 2006, so it's not just a matter of volume.

Demond 26.9-yard average. Davis 27.0-yard average. Very comparable.

Demond wanted to play RB, remember. Dude's fast. Glad they convinced him to play CB, because he's had some really good plays, some nice breakups and a pick or two, even if he's gotten burned once or twice. He reminds me of a Jerraud Powers style CB.
