SI: Is Chizik a Pete or a Peter?

Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples had an interesting of phrasing the uncertainty of Gene Chizik's head coaching credentials in an article today. He used The Peter Principle by Canadian duo of teacher Laurence J. Peter and journalist Raymond Hull to illustrate his point:

That principle, according its namesake, is this: "In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." In other words, any competent worker will continue to be promoted until he eventually reaches a job he isn't capable of performing.

Chizik's 5-19 record in two seasons as Iowa State head coach led many underwhelmed Auburn supporters to suggest he was the living embodiment of the Peter Principle. Maybe Chizik reached his ceiling as the defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas. Maybe his next job, as Cyclones head coach from 2007-08, was above his level of competence.

He goes on to point out that the same thing could have been said about Pete Carroll before he had a string of success at USC. The key for Carroll? Recruiting. No wonder Chizik is throwing so much effort into hauling in a top-notch initial class.

Read the rest of the story here.

I'll have a full update after practice tonight.

Excellent article! Thanks for sharing. We will all have to wait and see if CGC is successful at Auburn or not. I think it all depends on this season. How about you?

Either way TT never made that move to get us to the next level. Our program is very complacent. Bama owns the media around here, we never get a fair shake. i think the Auburn nation needs to boycott WJOX and call their sponsors to let them know why.

.....I gave up WJOX over a decade ago, when they hired Jay Barker, and it became the Bama-homer holier-than-thou show.

.....So far, Gene's made all the right moves. We'll see how he pans out come game-time. I've read complaints on game management at Iowa. You've got to remember that even the "Peters" of the world can learn from their mistakes.
