You're looking LIVE at a) my reflection in the press box glass and b) the sunny skies over Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss., a lovely town from what I saw on the short drive from the highway.
I will be updating this post with pre-game updates. Once the game starts, I'll be blogging by quarter, so check back periodically.
Stayed in Tupelo last night and went out to a folksy bar called J.R.'s, whch was hosting its Halloween bash. ("Bash" might be overstating it a bit; perhaps "gathering" is a better word; no, "fete," we'll go with "fete".) Pretty cheap beer and a live band that specialized in both kinds of music -- Country AND Western. My only gripe is the ballad-to-fast song ratio was heavily skewed in former's favor. Also, whenever the band took a break, the default song on the mixer shuffle was always Clarence Carter's "Strokin'." The crowd seemed to love it, though. Apparently Tupelo is stuck in an early-'90s time warp. Or at least J.R.'s was.
Vaught-Hemingway Stadium seems pretty nice. Kudos to the media parking setup, which was about as close as I think I've parked to a stadium this year. One down side: the sun is shining directly into the press box right now. I kind of wish I had worn sunglasses or at least brought some sunblock. I didn't think I'd come back from this game with a tan, but it might happen.
More updates as more players come out to the field.
UPDATE (10:38 a.m.): The kickers are on the field. Wes Byrum and Morgan Hull are the only two who have attempted field goals, so it doesn't look like Clinton Durst will be in the mix today.
Interestingly, all I've heard about Byrum is how he muscles the ball up there sometimes, but he's come up short on a couple of pre-game attempts of 50-plus. Now, that's not a short field goal by any means, but Hull kicked one from 52 that got to the first row of the stands, with no wind helping him out.
CORRECTION: Durst did take a few kicks at the end. He looks like he has a pretty strong leg. It will be interesting to see what direction Auburn goes once the game starts.
UPDATE (11:03 a.m.): Auburn brought three QBs -- Kodi Burns, Neil Caudle and Chris Todd. While Burns and Caudle have been taking snaps under center in warmups, Todd, though dressed, is only a spectator. He threw a little at the next drill, but I'd imagine Todd is only here as an emergency quarterback.
I don't see CB Jerraud Powers (hamstring) working with the cornerbacks right now. Take that for what it's worth. Perhaps he's getting some late treatment in the locker room.
Some numbers you need to know for this game:
8-1 -- Auburn record all-time in Ole Miss.
4-0 -- Tommy Tuberville's record at his old stomping grounds.
3 -- Straight games the Tigers have lost, their first three-game skid since 2001.
1999 -- The last time Auburn lost three straight conference games.
UPDATE (11:12 a.m.): Powers is out. Freshman D'Antoine Hood will start in his place at corner. That could be huge against Ole Miss' passing game. The Tigers really cannot afford any more injuries in the secondary.
