(This is where somebody always has to mention that the extra point miss COULD be costly. Well, duh. It's one less point on the board. I hate it when people make a big deal about pointing that out.)
Anyway, Auburn is certainly not going to waltz away with a victory in this one.
Some halftime thoughts:
- The good news is that the Tigers finally put together a nice offensive drive, going 85 yards in 16 plays and capping things with a 1-yard Brad Lester run. It took 8:19 off the clock. Auburn went to the ground for most of the drive. Mario Fannin accounted for 29 yards. Kodi Burns had two designed runs that went for 22 yard and a pair of first downs. He also hit Tommy Trott for an 11-yard pass on 3rd-and-9 when UT Martin brought the house on a blitz.
- There were a couple plays where Auburn players tried to reverse field about six times on the same play and lost 10-plus yards. Listen, I know you're playing an FCS team, but you're not Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl. It's simply not a smart thing to do.
- Wes Byrum missed a 44-yarder a few minutes before the half. Maybe he hasn't completely turned the corner. (Side note: Does he attempt any field goal shorter than 40 yards? Can't Auburn get this guy some chip shots?)
- Total yards: Auburn 201, UT Martin 151.
- Passing yards: Auburn 81, UT Martin 240.
- Rushing yards: Auburn 120, UT Martin 11.
- Quarterbacks: Burns: 6-13, 81 yards; Thompson: 13-22, 140 yards
