End first quarter: Auburn 13, UT Martin 7

Auburn definitely looks like a superior team out there, but a major special teams gaffe by the Tigers has kept UT Martin in the game.

Can't say I'm too impressed with the Auburn offense. It hasn't produced any touchdowns, and hasn't been able to move the ball much. The Tigers' two field goals were mostly the result of good field position.

Quarterback Kodi Burns hasn't thrown the ball well. He severely underthrew Chris Slaughter on Auburn's first drive after Slaughter had four or five steps on his defender going to the corner.

Other thoughts:
  • We got to witness one of best and worst special teams plays in a span of three minutes. Tristan Davis' 95-yard kick return to open the game was pretty. I don't know how he got through the crease.
  • But Robert Dunn's muffed punt was just a terrible, terrible decision. First of all, he drifted back from the 10-yard line, where you're supposed to let the ball go. Then he tried to pick it up and run from the end zone, only complicating matters and allowing UT Martin to recover for a touchdown. Inexcusable.
  • By the way, it was the Skyhawks' long snapper, Chip Martin, who recovered the ball for a touchdown. Nice hustle.
  • Nice first quarter by Wes Byrum, who looks like he might break out of a season long slump. He nailed a 48-yarder into the teeth of a pretty strong wind on the first one. I honestly didn't think they should have tried it. Shows what I know. Byrum added a 44-yarder later in the quarter.
  • UT Martin looked like it had something going on its final drive of the quarter, but running back Roren Thomas coughed up the ball deep in Auburn territory. Heads up play by safety Mike McNeil to recover the ball in bounds along the sideline.
