Sunday update: Injuries abound

Today's blog post is being sponsored by the final season of "E.R."

We got to speak to Tommy Tuberville today and, after some prodding, he rattled off the list of injured players. It's a pretty big list. Here are some specifics:
  • DT Sen'Derrick Marks (ankle): injured his other ankle during the game and only played two snaps in the second half. Will not practice today.
  • NG Tez Doolittle (groin): was not even going to travel to Ole Miss. Did as an emergency reserve only. Ended up playing in the second half. Will not practice today.
  • DE Antonio Coleman (pick an ailment, he's got it; specifically an ankle this week): has not practiced in a month but has played in every game.
  • DT Mike Blanc (hand): broke his hand at Ole Miss, is having X-rays today, might miss the rest of the year.
  • DE Michael Goggans (ankle): re-injured it on Saturday.
  • LB Josh Bynes (deep thigh bruise): will not practice until Wednesday.
  • LB Craig Stevens (turf toe): has had the injury all year, but it probably the healthiest player of all the injured players.
  • LB Merrill Johnson (hamstring): played 22 snaps on Saturday but wasn't effective. Coaches took him out because he was struggling to stop the run.
  • CB Jerraud Powers (hamstring): probably will not play this week.
  • CB Neiko Thorpe (ankle): probably will not play this week.
  • CB Walter McFadden (ankle/knee): will not practice until Wednesday, leaving true freshmen D'Antoine Hood and Harry Adams as starting corners during practice.
Phew, that's exhausting just writing that out. The trainers look like they'll be making their money this week.

Other developments from Sunday:
  • Tuberville said everyone in his family -- specifically his two sons -- is taking all the talk about his job security OK: "They’re fine. Of course, they hear the talk like everybody else, but they know the business. They know how tough it is and you’ve got to deal with the good and the bad. It’s a good lesson for them. You just kind of persevere and take it one week at a time. They’re old enough now to understand what’s going on."

  • On QB Kodi Burns: "He made some very, very good decisions. And he made some very, very bad ones. But that's part of growing up."

  • Strange comment about WR Chris Slaughter, who caught eight passes for 131 yards at Ole Miss. Tuberville called him a "role player" and described him as more of a possession receiver than a big-play guy. Funny, I seem to recall him catching passes of 37 and 42 yards Saturday.
  • On the struggling running game: "We don't have the one guy at running back that we know we can call his number and they're going to do the perfect thing like we've done in the past. We just have a bunch of guys back there who kind of alternate in trying to find the right consistency."

The Slaughter comments really bother me. This kid played one heck of a game and was pretty much the lone bright spot in the receiving corp. For Tubby to cut him down like that is...well, very UN-Tubby-like.....
