Auburn defensive end Nick Fairley was beaten out by Clemson's Da'Quan Bowers for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as college football's top defensive player.The award was given out by the Football Writers Association of America at a banquet in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday night.
Fairley, who earned Associated Press SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors earlier Monday, led the SEC in both sacks (10.5) and tackles for a loss (21), setting a school record in the latter.
The junior remains a finalist for the Lombardi Award (top lineman) and Chuck Bednarik Award (top defensive player). Both awards will be presented in Houston — the Lombardi on Wednesday and Bednarik on Thursday.
Bowers, a junior, had an NCAA-best 15.5 sacks in addition to 25 tackles for a loss, second most nationally.

I guess Nick will just have to settle for being a leader on a 13-0 team which features the #11 rush defense in the country.
That's just not quite as good as being on a 6-6 squad featuring the #30 rush defense.
It's not a team award, though. Bowers put up some pretty ridiculous numbers this year.
Wish Nick would have won! I know Bowers had good numbers but Nick was 5 sacks and 4 TFL behind him and he played DT...it seems like an end has an easier path to the QB...just run past the offensive tackle...still proud of Nick's wonderful season, he's been a beast! War Eagle!

How many hurries, knockdowns, and QB's not completing the game did Bowers have? How many forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, and interceptions did Bowers have? Just curious.
